Cake Decorating Fun

In college, Brad and I would spend hours watching Cake Boss. Well, Cake Boss and River Monster’s, can you guess who chose which one?

I’ve always loved the idea of cake decorating, I even made my sister’s 16th birthday cake in the shape of a car and big 5-0 numbers for my parent’s joint 50th. So when it came time for my wedding almost two years ago, I decided that one way I could save money was by making my own cake!

Everyone thought I was a little crazy, but I was so excited about it. I made 7 practice cakes leading up to the big day and brought them into the office for taste testing and feedback. By the time my wedding rolled around, I swear I had perfected the chocolate chunk chocolate cake recipe with a blackberry vanilla cream filling and large floret finish. Here's a pic.
Picture
And since then, I haven’t made another cake! Whhatt! I decided that for Brad's birthday this year, I’ll make another cake,. It took me a while to figure out what to make but after a bit of pinterest searching. I saw this one and thought I'd do an adaptation of it.

On our trip to southern Africa last year, Brad learned more about leopards and they quickly became his favorite animal. He has a statue on his desk of one, it's his phone background and he talks about them at least once a week so I decided to do a leopard cake.

I’m pretty excited with how it turned out! What do you guys think?! I didn't have an exact guide for what to do. Just a picture of a unicorn, google images of leopards and some touch ups along the way., but I still got so much joy out of the process. At the end of it, the kitchen was a giant mess and yet, it still felt so good to have an idea of something in mind, spend a few hours on it, and see an end product. Was it perfect, no? Was it original, absolutely!

it was such a great reminder for me and hopefully for all of you too that perfection isn't required to have a good outcome. You don't need tons of experience to take a first stab. After all, experience really only comes from doing over and over again. I'm excited to keep trying my icing techniques and sharing what I learn with you guys. To me cooking and cake decorating is a different kind of DIY, one done in the kitchen but requires just as much creaetivity and trial and error that I get from design, art projects and wood working.

What is something you guys have been dreaming about trying. That you've said "It would be cool to "fill in the blank", but I wouldn't even know where to start? Put it in the comments. The first step to gaining that experience is saying it out loud and then it's amazing how the pieces come together overtime to give you that first chance. You got this.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I have been wanting a dog for a looonnngggg time. When my sister lived with me, I basically acted like her dog, Winston, was mine too and lived vicariously through her. So, when Brad and I welcomed Stella into our family in October, I was beyond excited.

To be honest, I knew it would take some convincing to get Brad onboard (he loves dogs too, but just didn’t think it was the right time for us) and so I did a lot of research on what type of dog` would be good for an apartment, how we would fit it into our lives and the cost. I compiled it all into a PowerPoint and expense spreadsheet. I know it sounds excessive, but it was actually a great gut check to see if we really could take on the responsibility.

And so, when we decided on Stella, I quickly hopped online and made frequent trips to PetSmart and Petco to get all the goodies for Stella’s arrival (She flew to us through Delta Pet Cargo and they were amazing!)

I know a few of you are gearing up for your own puppies and I’ve been getting tons of questions on what to buy so I’ve compiled my complete checklist of what to buy for a new puppy before they arrive and few others you can get based on things you learn about their behavior after a couple weeks.
Some of the best places to shop and get discounts: Petco, Petsmart coupon books, PetFlow, Chewy. Also, remember almost all these places will price match if you ask.

◊ Check out the Banfield Puppy Plan through Petsmart for amazing petcare at a great price
◊ Make sure you ask what food they are currently eating so you can get the same one
◊ Leash - I love the rope leashes, they are really durable and look cute!
◊ Harness - This one is really good. Stella didn't love wearing it at first but it helps a ton so that she doesn't slip out of her collar while on a walk.
◊ Collar - I got both the xs and s that Stella needed in a sale bucket at Petsmart but found similar ones here and here
◊ Potty Bags - you can get these in bulk in Amazon.
◊ Potty Bag Dispenser - I like this one with the zipper so you can store some treats in there as well.
◊ First Toy – This was seriously her favorite toy. We gave her the little whale baby as soon as she got out of the crate the first time and then put the blanket in her new crate so that she could have something that instantly made her feel like home. She still drags both of these all around the house and it’s the cutest thing.
◊ Food bowl - I loved the dipped ceramic look to go with the rest of my neutral decor at home.
◊ Water jug - This one is super helpful so that you don't have to fill the water as often
◊ Bed - I got Stella's on sale at Tuesday Morning but here is one similar. She loves the lips on the side to use as a pillow for her head.
◊ Crate - I really wanted to DIY her crate, but even DIY couldn't beat how affordable this one was. Maybe one day I'll still do a DIY but for affordability, this is the way to go!
◊ Crate Pad - to keep her cozy even in her crate. You can wash this too if there are any early accidents. I did keep a potty pad in her crate for the first few weeks just to be safe.
◊ Training Treats - Stella is super food motivated and love these.
◊ Puppy pads - We used these when she was a puppy and also again once she got spayed so she had an easy spot to go when she was out of it.
◊ Fresh patch - We don't have a yard so we get these delivered monthly and keep it on the balcony so she has an easy spot to go.
◊ Carpet Cleaner - literally the MUST have purchase while potty training. We traveled a lot while she was a puppy too so this came in handy in everyone else's house too.
◊ Food Tupperware - I keep Stella's food on the kitchen counter so I really wanted a cute container. I love this one and then I keep her big 50Lb food bag in the pantry and refill it as needed.
◊ Treat Tupperware - I love this one as a simple and fun jar that keeps her treats fresh.
◊ Brush - I like that this one has a soft side and a harder side. Stella was super sensitive to brushing at first so having the soft side really helped her get used to brushing.
◊ Shampoo - I haven't tried any others yet but this one is great so far.
◊ Slow eating food bowl - Stella eats way too fast and almost inhales her food so we had to get these to try help slow her down. This is the one we got, but here is a more stylish one that I want to get soon.
◊ Mini tennis balls - She LOVES fetch and these are perfect for a small dog or puppy
◊ Chew Toys - I mean, can a pup really ever have too many toys. This one and this one are her favorite.
◊ Toy box - I hate clutter, so everyday, I put her toys back in the bin before bed. I love this one from ikea
◊ Antler chew – This is an amazing toy while teething or if you'll be gone for a few hours, it keeps them entertained and is great for their teeth too.

One other tip that I learned from my mother in law is when you feed them, make them sit and use a command like “watch” and have them make eye contact with you before giving them a kibble. We modified this a bit so that we give her a small handful and make her sit or lie down and make eye contact before getting it. This has really helped her listen to us betters and learn her commands. For Stella, it also helps her to slow down her eating, which she needs so it’s a win win. I highly recommend it so that you can incorporate a little training in everyday.

Stella starts formal training at the beginning of March so I’ll keep you updated with all the tips I learn. I’m hoping to get her trained up to pass the Good Citizen Canine test so that we can take her to volunteer events like hospital visits to bring some patients a little happiness.

In the meantime, if you have any training tips, please send them my way, I’d love to hear them!

My Favorite At Home and Studio Workout Programs

My "Best of 2019" Guide

Picture

Picture
I have to admit, this year, it took me a little bit of time to get back into the swing of things. Well to clarify, I was in full swing planning and goal setting, I tried a few new approaches this year that were really fun and effective in getting me to think about exactly what I wanted out of the year and how I can break that down into manageable chunks to get there. See the full posts here and here.

So now that planning is officially finished, or at least the annual one (I like quarterly planning too, sorry it must be the project manager in me) I am taking action once again. One of the goals on my list this year is to do an intense workout 3-4 times a week, something that elevates my heart rate and burns lots of calories.

Fitness has always been a big part of my life, I was even a barre instructor for a couple years, so I’ve tried quite a few workout regimens/classes. I like to switch it up often (I normally stick to something for 3-6 months and then fall off/get bored so by switching things up I keep it fresh and coming back for more).

Also, depending on my schedule, at home workouts are sometimes much easier to fit in then a studio class, so I incorporate those in as well. At the end of the day, I really hate being in a gym solo (even virtually solo). If you're like me and need someone talking you through the different postures and motivating you to work harder, then the list I've compiled here is for you.

These are some of my favorite spots, ranging from local San Diego treasures to national chains and home programs. I’ve tried them all and compiled a review for you to find the one that works best for you. None of these are sponsored, just a look back at my experiences, what I like/liked and what I didn't.

Aaptiv

I loved using Aaptiv when I was running outdoors more often. It's an audio program that allows you to just plug in your headphones and move on the treadmill, outdoors, or through strength training workouts.

Pros:
  • All you need is your phone - easy for on the go
  • Awesome playlists and great motivational coaches
  • Planned programs to help you reach a goal (5K to Marathon training programs)

Cons:
  • No visuals sometimes made it hard to know if you were doing the right thing, especially with the strength training or yoga videos

Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide

If you haven't seen this on instagram before, just check out the hashtag #bbg and prepare to be bombarded with tons of amazing transformations. This Australian powerhouse created a home-based workout (and now super cool app) that combines high intensity days with low intensity days for a balanced but still intense program.

Pros:
  • Engaging app ($20/month) that has really good visuals (posture gifs) combined with audio cues.
  • Great schedule with 3-4 days of the training program from the app and 3-4 days of walking or light running. You definitely get sore from the workouts but the day in between helps to release some of the lactic acid.

Cons:
  • The audio doesn't really leave you feeling inspired or push you to work harder. It's more of a posture guide than a "class".
  • There aren't any great playlists unless you hook up to apple music, but Spotify does have some playlists made from other bbg fans that are good.
Kait Hurley

I met Kait back when I was a barre instructor and always loved the way she cued postures. I was doing her program back when it first came out and was just on the online forum. I absolutely loved how the class mixed high intensity, with long strengthening holds and finished up with a solid 5-10 minutes of meditation at the end. I've always been bad at incorporating meditation into my life so having this as part of the program really helped.

Pros:
  • Great energy and ability to really connect with your breath and body both mentally and physically.
  • Meditation section at the end (you can also do the meditation segments by themselves but I always liked to do it with the movements)
  • Classes with various time allotments (10 min, 30 min, and 60 min formats)

Cons:
  • Limited classes (this was just my experience when I first started it, the program was new so after a while, I had done all the videos a few times, she has grown it quite a lot since then, adding an app and running section so this is likely . not a con anymore, to be honest, it will be something I try again soon to incorporate into my rotation of workouts)
  • Sometimes the postures were a bit complex and moved quite quickly, so I had to slow down and take it at my own pace.
Beachbody OnDemand

Yes, this is the same Beachbody as the home video DVDs, but now their On Demand platform gives you unlimited access to all the programs in their archives. There is a range of difficulty levels, props vs. no prop classes, and nutritional guides and supplements to pick from.

Pros:
  • Super affordable. It's $100 for the year to get unlimited access to a variety of classes. I basically just keep my subscription for the days I can't make it to a studio or when I want to do a casual at home yoga session, I can use their videos.
  • Mobile, computer, and if you have a smart TV, it can connect there as well making it easy to hear and see all the moves.

Cons:
  • I don't know why, but I just always get bored of the programs really quickly. I have never been able to finish one of their scheduled programs, but I love to randomly pick and choose a new workout to add when I miss a day at the studio. My favorite program so far has been Core De Force (I stuck with that one the longest).

Relevate

If you are in the San Diego area, you have to go check out the Relevate studio (and if you are visiting you should go too!) It's one of the most intense barre, yoga fusion classes I have ever taken and yet I somehow leave feeling restored from the ending stretching and meditation session and forget all about the burning moves that took place for the majority of the class. Shannon, the founder, is soo welcoming too so whether you are a regular or it's your first class you get the same personalized attention.  Oh and there is pilates there now too! I haven't squeezed in a class yet, but heard it is so good and can't wait to take one.

Pros:
  • Great mixture of intense, heart-pumping workout with restorative stretching and meditation to close class.
  • Lot's of community events and featured classes that make membership engaging and fun. One of the classes I can't get enough of is the Reiki classes, these ones are special events so don't happen too frequently, but I love mixing them in with the rest of my workouts. It's amazing what spending an hour really stretching does for you.

Cons:
  • Only one studio in San Diego (it's awesome though!)
Orangetheory

This has been my go-to workout lately. I'm a pretty competitive person and the real-time metrics happening in this studio let me compete against myself every single class. I love that I can measure in real-time what my effort is equaling on the output of my heart rate and calories burn. I go to the La Jolla and Point Loma studios in San Diego and the coaches are so awesome too!

Pros:
  • Metrics tracking both in class and outside of class. After every class you get an email with how you did and comparing to your last class, last week, last month etc. So great for tracking
  • App that counts splat points outside of the studio. This is awesome so that you can still keep your tracking strong with outside workouts too
  • Memberships work at studios across the nation. This is awesome for me since I travel a lot, so I can take a class almost anywhere across the country.
  • Lots of challenges throughout the year to keep pushing to achieve something new.

Cons:
  • It's so popular, classes can be really crowded at prime times so you have to sign up well in advance, especially for the Point Loma studio.

 Soul Cycle

So far, I've only done a couple of Soul Cycle classes when I'm traveling with friends or family but I can totally see why everyone loves them. They are such awesome workouts and the music is so good! I also love that you cycle to the beat and incorporate weights at the end. I haven't tried other spin classes yet, but plan to and will do a review later comparing them.

Pros:
  • Awesome club-like vibe with great music and hitting the beat as you ride.
  • Burns tons of calories.

Cons:
  • Super expensive and not a lot of discounting opportunities even if you become a member.
  • Equipment - I have to rent shoes every time I go which adds to the already expensive class. I'm sure the regulars have their own shoes but for drop-in classes, it's a nuisance.
 ClassPass

This a new one that I am really enjoying mixing with my Orangetheory membership. It allows you to go to lots of studio options without the super heavy membership rates of individual studios. I really like that they have a lower priced package for $40 a month that gets you 2-4 classes at a studio. This helps me mix my high intensity Orangetheory classes with more restorative sessions on ClassPass.

Pros:
  • Ability to mix it up between different types of workouts
  • Flexible pricing depending on your needs
  • Huge selection of studios so you can find something that fits your location and time for a class.

Cons:
  • Limited to smaller more boutique studios, not a lot of major franchises. It's not necessarily a con, but if it had more of the bigger studios I like with the smaller ones, it would be perfect.
  • Changing studios, sometimes you find one you really like and then they aren't a part of ClassPass anymore so that can be a bummer.
These are just some of my experiences over the last couple years of training. There are so many other programs out there, both small and large and I’d love to hear some of your favorites to add to my list of workouts to try! Let’s hear it in the comments!

xoxo,
Jessica

The Number One Thing You Should Add To Your Morning Routine

Smile Brilliant Teeth Whitening to Brighten Up Your Morning

Picture
Picture
Picture

I’m really excited to share with you guys this amazing product I got to try out. As I got ready for the holidays, I was lucky enough to partner with Smile Brilliant and I have to say it’s one of the best whitening products I have ever used.

To back up a little, I’ve actually tried quite a few whitening systems. Growing up, to say I had some teeth issues would maybe be a bit of an understatement. Eventually my parents started calling me the “cha-ching child” because of how *unique* my teeth were. Before I was 16 I had 4 teeth pulled, an expander, braces, and professional whitening since I had some "miniature teeth" that needed to be bonded. Yes, I definitely was the butt of some jokes throughout middle school and early high-school (I also had a back brace but that's a whole different story)

As I got older, I knew the benefits of maintaining all the dental work, but in the laziness of everyday life I ended up drinking all the delicious things like coffee, tea, and wine and gradually wore my retainer less and less. I tried whitening toothpaste, whitening strips and even at home whitening kits so I’ve done my fair share of research and inevitably the product always had a horrible taste and made my teeth super sensitive that I ended up stopping early.

When I got my Smile Brilliant kit, I was surprised that they help you make professional custom-fitted trays. Passed kits I had tried used hot water molds to make the trays, like mouth guards, and never fit quite right. These impressions took less than 10 minutes to make and then I sealed them in a pre-paid label and one week later my custom trays arrived and fit really well.

After that I applied the whitening gel for 45 minutes. I did it every other day just because I know that a slower process works better for me. I actually did it while walking the dog in the morning. It was so easy and then I’d switch out the trays to the desensitizing gel for 20 minutes while doing my hair and make-up for the day. I’d already had my breakfast and coffee before the walk so it was setting basically until lunch. It was so simple to incorporate into my morning routine, and the best part is that it had more of a minty taste unlike all the other products I’ve ever tried. Check out my results below after just 2 weeks!

It’s really amazing to see how far teeth whitening has comes since I first tried it and I’m thankful I finally found something that whitens the coffee stains away without making eating ice cream impossible from the tooth sensitivity.

How to Get Out of Vacay Mode After the Holidays

Picture
Ok so even though we are already on the 6th day of the month, it has felt so difficult to get back "into the zone" this year. Not only that but I feel like over the last few years New Year’s resolutions have started to get a bad reputation. It used to be a way to start something new or maybe restart something you should have been doing all along. Now, it feels like everyone fears the failure of falling off as the year gets going so they would rather not set them.

My view falls somewhere in between. I think the act of reflecting is so important to improving so unless you make a concerted effort to track and reflect upon your goals, they can become frustrating. What’s more is that as we get busier with the year, if we don’t keep them top of mind through a intentional system, they will quite likely fade into the background of things on the very bottom of our to-do list that eventually just fall off.

Planners have never really worked for me, I always use them for a week or two and forget after that. Then when I finally do remember, I've forgotten the planner in another room or at work or something. Last year, I started to find a system that really worked for me using both the Reminders app on my phone (it syncs with my computer) and a modified bullet journal that I made on my ipad. So over the last couple days to help get our minds (especially mine) out of vacay mode and into the domination zone, I’ve revamped my tracking template for accountability and a few of my tips to sticking with it and making 2019 your best year yet... but actually.

  • Keep it simple – When setting goals, don’t take on too much. Sometimes a good goal is to continue doing something you already do and is helping you.
  • Segment your goals - There are 3 categories that help me organize my life and feel good about keeping balance across the board.
    1. The first one is foundational - health - both mind and body need to be tended to in order to be good both at home and at work.
    2. The next one is home, meaning the people you connect with most (they don't *have* to live with you, but be important to your network of relationships) and the space you either rent, own, or love to frequent. When these pieces of our life feel good, you have the peace and confidence to do more beyond the clock.
    3. The last pieces is to take action for your goal or passion beyond the clock. This could be the things that help you get ahead in your full-time job, hobbies you love and want to improve on, or growing your side-hustle.
  • Write it down - Writing something down helps us commit it to memory and commit to it overall. It's especially helpful if you place it somewhere you see often, like in your bathroom or next to your stove.
  • Track it - This really is the second half of "writing it down". The ability to track against an expectation helps in two aspects, one, it gives you accountability to yourself, and two, it allows you to have a metric at the end of the month. Let's say one of your goals was to lose weight, and to measure that you wanted to go to the gym 3 times a week. At the end of the month you ended up going 10 times out of your goal of 12, you can feel good about being close to your goal. If instead you hadn't tracked it, then you would likely focus on the times you missed and slowly give up altogether when in actuality, doing a good percentage of you goal is better than nothing at all.
  • Talk about it - This is another way to keep yourself accountable. Talking to other people about your goals makes you not only want to stay true to it for yourself but also for others. In fact, sharing it with some of your closest friends is even better than sharing it broadly across social media so that you know people are really listening. They can also be a great support system to keep you going or get you back on track when you may have fallen off.
  • Reset on Sunday - Set a reminder on your phone for 15 minutes every Sunday. It could be morning or night but just sit and catch up on any tracking and take a little time to recommit to your goals and keep them top of mind.
  • Review quarterly - Lastly, don't let this process be something that happens only once a year. If you do it quarterly (or even monthly) you will keep focused on what you really want and make sure it happens.

Most people think the hardest part about New Year's resolutions is sticking to them, but actually the more difficult part is creating a resolution that you can track and actually give yourself the opportunity to stick to. If you leave out the details that will help get you toward a goal, you can easily push that to the side, I mean there is no way to tell if you are really working toward it or not. So if you need a little help getting out of vacay mode, feel free to download this action planner template that I use and always always, text, email, or DM me with any questions. I love talking about these things and want to stay accountable with all of you.

xoxo,
Jessica

Reflecting on 2018 and preparing for an even better 2019

It was just about 1 year ago when Brad and I were lying in bed talking about our side hustles. I had just recently shut down my handbag business venture, aLign, and was feeling a little disheartened around the whole thing. The idea had really been good, I had gotten great feedback when people saw it, (now there are some bigger companies that have a bag just like it) but at the end of the day, there were no buyers, or if there were, they certainly didn’t know about me. As I lay there, I thought about what things had gone well and what hadn’t, and I realized that the parts I loved most about the venture was to design. As I progressed with the thought a dream unfolded to have a shop filled with treasures from my favorite places and people around the world, to create, and to share with a community of amazing people. Basically, to do all the things I loved to do outside of my typical 9-5 working hours (although, who really works hours like that nowadays, it’s more like from email to slack to text working hours). Either way, with a bit of reflection, I jolted upright and thought, well why the heck am I not just doing that already. Why do I have to wait for something else, or some other business idea to be successful to enable my true passions to take hold.

I literally hopped onto my phone and bought the domain name for beyondtheclock that very second. I didn’t exactly know what it would be yet, just a place for me to share my passions outside of work, but I knew that I needed to make it happen.

After a little bit of time setting up the website, I wrote one of my first posts planning my year for myself and sharing it with all of you to help keep me accountable. Here’s how I stacked up and how I plan to keep my goals moving forward next year.

  • Better management of my to-do list - I came up with a system that really helped me using the reminders feature on the mac and iphone. I create multiple lists and then a single hot list that I move the top 3 things to accomplish each day onto to really keep things prioritized and moving.
  • Learning more about marketing and social media - I studied Instagram quite a lot and learned a ton. There is still a long way to go but between content generation and understanding the algorithm, I think I made a big dent on this goal that I'm excited about.
  • Being more consistent on Instagram - The first half of the year was definitely better than the second. I posted almost every single day up until June. When we launched Little Foodie in July, my focus shifted to that Instagram account. I'm hoping to get back into more of a balance between the two in 2019.
2019 Goals
  • Be more confident in asking for the things that will help me grow.
  • Build maturity around product development and product launches/commercialization strategy. This is driven both by my full-time work in the cancer care industry as well as with Little Foodie.

Decor

2018 Goals
  • 12 DIY projects - I ended up doing 9 DIY projects and 3 new recipes (all linked below) so I made it to a version of 12 and am excited to do more next year.
  • Pin design inspiration at least once a week - I didn't end up doing anything with Pinterest and focused more on Instagram in 2019. Next year will have a bit more focus on Pinterest to expand my content.
2019 Goals
  • 20 DIY or Recipes
  • Expand my knowledge and use of Pinterest - Create a pin for every blog post

Wellness

2018 Goals
  • Plan a menu on the weekend with all groceries purchased to be ready for the week. - I probably only ended up doing this a total of 6 weeks out of the year. Next year we may try one of those meal prep companies like Blue Apron to see how that works for us.
  • Eat out for lunch only once a week. (Bring my healthy leftovers instead, also much better for the wallet). - It's more like twice a week on average which I think is an ok balance but I hope that with some shifts I make on meal planning in 2019, this can be more of a reality.
  • Move 7 days a week with at least 4 being more intense workouts - To be honest, I didn't do the best job tracking this. Once we got our dog Stella, I definitely move 7 days a week walking her, however the intense workouts are more like 2-3 times a week.
  • Continue to explore meditation/visualization to find what works well for me. - I started doing this more towards the end of the year and it has really helped reduce my stress so I am excited to integrate it further into my wellness routine.

2019 Goals
  • Plan 3 weekly menus that rotate throughout the year - I think this way it will be more manageable to do but we will see.
  • Add stretching and guided meditation at least once a week. Keep more intense workouts to 4 times a week.

Travel

2018 Goals
  • Document my trips more consistently - I actually did a great job with this on my Instagram stories and it was so fun to get questions and comments from everyone learning more about the places.
2019 Goals
  • Continue to document on Insta stories and incorporate more aspects into blog posts as well.

Things I added:

Although I had specific goals, there were a few items that weren't on the list that I added throughout the year. They took some time away from my other goals but were so worth it.
  • Beyond the Clock Design - I launched my home and commercial design work and had 4 clients. It was so much fun to get to work on my passions and find fun ways to make spaces that people love
  • Little Foodie - I launched a kids apparel and gift company with one of my best friends. It has been so much fun and we have such great feedback that I'm excited to see where 2019 takes us.
It’s amazing what happens when you write something down. Overall, I’d give myself a B+. I may not have tracked everything to a T and I definitely fell off from workouts and blogging here and there, but overall, I kept at it, I found my way back and I enjoyed every second of it along the way.

The very best part about this whole thing is the people I have met through Instagram, collaborations, emails, and friends I have reconnected with through new conversations. I smiled with delight when I received a text from one of my old friends asking for advice on some new living room décor. I don’t think she ever would have thought of me for a question like that prior to this year and it feels amazing to know that the work I’ve been doing is resonating with others.

I know that with working a full-time job and running a baby company on the side, this blog doesn’t always get my full attention, however, I can’t thank each one of you enough for following along on this journey with me through thick and thin. Each like, comment, and email that you send, fills my heart with one of the greatest joys and it means the world to have you here.

As we head into the last few days of the year, I wanted to say THANK YOU and get ready for a 2019 filled with fun new content and giveaways to hopefully help keep you motivated and inspired for all things you love beyond the clock. Happy New Year!

xoxo,
Jessica

Christmas Day Bread Recipe

Christmas Star Twisted Bread

A few weeks before Thanksgiving, I saw the cover of Taste of Home magazine with this gorgeous looking bread spread across the page. I immediately snapped a photo and told myself I'd make it for Thanksgiving. In fact, I'd even do a practice one before Thanksgiving to make sure it turned out ok.....well Thanksgiving came and Thanksgiving bread and still the closest I got to baking the bread was sending a text saying that I wanted to do it.

This is the first Christmas that Brad and I don't have roommates and so I took the opportunity to create some new traditions just for us! This was my chance to finally make this epic looking bread! The first time I tried it, I followed the recipe perfectly and was so excited when the bread actually rose during the hour sit time (I didn't have high hopes for my bread making skills so that fact that I could do it means anyone can.) The only problem with the first batch was that once it had the slightest golden brown top, I took it out and started eating. The edges were good but the middle was a sad state of dough.

I could tell that it would be really good with a different filler and so I decided to give it another go for my company Christmas potluck, this time with pesto and cheese. I stayed patient and let it bake and bake and gave it the good old toothpick test just to make sure it was cooked and was so happy about how it turned out.

So the verdict is in from me, Brad and all my co-workers that this bread tastes as good as it looks. Whether you want something sweet for Christmas morning or a delicious savory appetizer/side for Christmas Eve dinner, this bread is sure to be a conversation starter and taste oh so good.

Hope your Christmas is filled with delicious goodies and if you want to add this one to your table, here is the original recipe link and below are some other filling ideas that Brad and I brainstormed to try next time.

Filling Options:
Pesto & Cheese
Raspberry Jam
Marionberry Jam
Nutella
Marinara & Mozerella
Garlic Butter & Rosemary

Enjoy and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

xoxo,
Jessica

P.S. I'd love to hear your favorite traditions too! What is one of your favorite Christmas day recipes to share with your family?

Co-Worker Gift Guide

Best end of year/holiday gift guide for co-workers, your boss, and friends

Picture

'Tis the season for gift guides! Lately, there have been a lot of gift guides floating through my feeds and I'm loving it! It is so helpful to see what other people are loving and what they have found to really add value to their lives. Although I find them super helpful for adding to my own Christmas list and/or a close family member, some of the suggestions are just a little out of my price point for gift giving on a bigger scale (i.e. friends and co-workers).

I love to give a little something to friends as I meet up for happy hour or coffee around the holiday season. Something that doesn’t break the bank but also shows love and care for having them in my life. The same goes for co-workers, in reality, I actually spend more time with them than friends so a thank you for a great year always goes a long way.

That being said, depending how big your circle of friends is, this can quickly become a much bigger expense than intended. I’ve been searching for these go-to gifts this season and rounded up my gift guide for affordable and fabulous gifts to share with all of you. To be fair, I may have overdone the personalization aspect of things, but a lot of time people love the personal touch yet would never get it for themselves so it really adds a little something extra to the gift.
  1.  Scented candle - ($12.00) These candles are some of my absolute favorites! They smell amazing, burn forever, and once you are done, the jar top makes for an amazing coaster!
  2. Handmade fleece blanket - ($15.00 - $25.00) This is a great DIY gift. It requires no sewing, is quick and easy and you can pick the perfect fabric combination for the person in mind. Joann's always has coupons online so find a deal to make it even more affordable!
  3. Bud vase & eucalyptus leaves - ($10.00) These sleek and minimal vases are the perfect gift for someone to add some good vibes to their home or desk.
  4. Personalized stationary wax seal - ($15.00 - $25.00)This gift is filled with nostalgia and fun. Most people don't use wax seals anymore but they are actually super fun to do and a great way to add a personal touch to letters.
  5. Personalized stationary - ($18.00) So often at work we are taking notes or leaving post its. This is a great way to add an extra touch around the office and know for sure who the note is from ;-)
  6. Monogrammed winter gloves - How many times do you lose your pair of black gloves right?! These are a great way to make an affordable staple unique.
  7. Bluetooth tracker -  ($14.00-$25.00) I lose my keys all . the . time! If it's not keys, it's something. We all have that one think we misplace and now you can gift someone the ability to find it. With an 8-pack that breaks down to $13.75 per tile, place it in a gift card holder or mini stocking and you have the perfect functional gift.
  8. Wine Ornament - (8.00) I've gifted bottles of wine in the past, but these wine ornaments are so festive and a unique twist to a classic co-worker gift.
  9. Notebook and unique pens - Whether it's journaling for personal development or taking notes during a meeting, a personalized notebook takes something relatively generic and makes it special. If you are willing to splurge a bit, keep your gift under the $30 mark with these super adorable pens from Sparkly Scribes.
And remember, no matter who the gift is for, a personal, handwritten, holiday greeting card goes a long way.

Happy shopping!

xoxo,
Jessica

Raising Tots with Good Taste!

The culmination of all my passions.

Picture

You may have noticed I've been a bit quieter blogging lately - it's actually for a super exciting reason. I've been working late nights behind the scenes for a big launch of a new business! It's been almost a year in the making and I'm so thrilled to finally be able to share all about Little Foodie with you.

Health and wellness has always been something that I have been passionate about, although growing up I didn't really think of it as an "extra" thing. I played year round sports and my parents always cooked healthy meals so it was just part of the way I lived. When I started working, I began noticing how hard it was to find time to exercise and cook healthy meals. I work in the cancer industry and continuously noticed co-workers (and sometimes myself) fall prey to busy schedules and easy cravings.

When one of my previous colleagues, Dena (also in the biotech space and an amazing entrepreneur), approached me about joining forces to try and combat unhealthy habits from a young age, I was super excited to jump in. After nearly a year of late night email threads, weekend brainstorming coffee dates, and tons and tons of learning about the food industry, we decided the perfect way to start making a difference is by making healthy eating FUN!

So today, I'm so excited to present to you the first collection of Little Foodie. A collection of onesies and toddler t-shirts featuring adorable, brightly-colored fruit and vegetable characters with a memorable message for healthy eating. Stylish, comfortable and 100% cotton, it's the perfect culmination of all my passions, design, health and family.

Take some time to browse the collection and if you know of a cute boutique in your area that these would be perfect for, please reach out! You can always grab one for your next baby shower gift while you are at it :-p.

Can't wait to hear what you think and thank you for helping spread the word!

xoxo,

Jessica

Top 5 Ways to Improve Your Productivity (Even in Summer)

Picture

So many of you ask me how I stay organized with my businesses and my full-time job. For those of you who are new to the blog, I work full-time in the cancer diagnostics/care industry as a project manager and enjoy sharing my passion for design here (plus I'm working on a secret project that I'm so excited to launch soon). There are definitely some late nights involved and some early mornings, but honestly, I find that with a few key habits and tools, I can get more productivity out of normal working hours and still enjoy quality time with my husband and friends.

Thanks to all your DM's on instagram, I've rounded up my top 5 tools and tips to keep me organized, productive and balanced. I love when you guys send me your questions so that I can provide you the most helpful content.

1. Water
I know you have probably heard this one a million times, but honestly, it makes such a difference. Lately, I really haven't been drinking as much water as I used to and I can feel the difference in my energy as well as just how I feel in my body. Since health and wellness have always been important to me, I normally try to make it a priority in my day and when I do, I have more energy to get more things done.

2. Exercise
Have you ever heard the saying, "a body in motion stays in motion"? This is one that my husband and I use all the time, but we take the slightly modified version from Tony Robbins, "Motion creates emotion". In other words, if you start moving, it creates the emotion and motivation you need to really accomplish your goals. If you can just squeeze in a 10 or 15 minute walk, that will help get more things off your list in the long run.

3. 2Do
Now for the lists! I love to-do lists and if I don't write it down, it doesn't get done. When I was younger, I always tried to memorize what I needed to finish (for some reason I thought it was more impressive that way) but inevitably something fell off the list - normally more than one thing. So when I found2Do, an app for my ipad and phone, I was excited to have an electronic version of all my sticky notes floating around my house. I have different lists for projects I'm working on and can easily see tasks for all of them on one list or by project and set due dates and reminders as well as add notes. Even better, I can share my lists! My husband and I have one that we share so that we can help keep each other accountable and productive for our family to-dos.

4. Goodnotes
I use this app on my ipad with my apple pencil to take handwritten notes. Like I said, writing things down is how I remember it so not only do I write down to-dos in my 2Do app, but any notes that I take for bigger meetings I'll add in these notebooks. It's like carrying around 10 notepads for each project but they are all in one easily accessible and searchable spot. This app is also amazing for my designs! I do a lot of space planning and DIY sketches so that I can refer back to them as I work through the projects.

5. Being on Time - JORD watch
The habit of being on time is something my parents taught me a long time ago and has been one of the most crucial pieces to my productivity. It's amazing what this little act can do it terms of building rapport with colleagues and partners as well as helping you stick to your schedule so that you can achieve more. I normally keep time on my phone, but when I"m in a meeting or at a restaurant with friends, I turn over my phone so that I can avoid being rude and looking at my phone with each notification that comes in. Instead, I try to really be present with whoever I'm with. The problem I ran into however, was that I quite literally lost track of time and ended up setting myself back on so many things. I wanted to find a way where I could effortlessly keep track of the time. I had been looking for watches for a while, but a lot of the metal ones, were really heavy and clunky and an apple watch defeated the purpose of trying to unplug from notifications, so when I found JORD wooden watches, I was really interested in giving them a try. I have to say I am SO impressed with both the minimalist design and quality of their watches (I got the Cassia Series, Ebony and Sable.) Not only did it come in such an awesome box, but the wood makes it really light and easy to wear and it also has such an awesome scent, you can ever so faintly smell the unique wood. I've been way better at keeping track of my day and as a bonus I get tons of compliments on my watch.

At the end of the day, the best way to stay productive and keep yourself organized is to commit to your values and goals that you want to achieve. In order to help you all do that and achieve your dreams, I've partnered with JORD watches to give you 10% off any watch of your choice (or maybe as a gift for that friend who is always late) and one of you will receive $100 off!

To get your discount head over here and enter to win!

Hope you love your watch as much as me and that these tips help you stay productive this summer too!

xoxo,

Jessica
